Blepharospasm (also called benign essential blepharospasm) is blinking or other eyelid movements, like twitching, that you can’t control.

Blepharospasm happens when the part of the brain that controls your eyelid muscles stops working correctly. Sometimes blepharospasm runs in families, and most commonly affects women between the ages of 40 to 60. In most cases, unfortunately doctors aren’t sure what causes it.
